When people tell us that they do not like camping, we always reply that they obviously haven’t been on a good camping trip yet.

There is a type of camping out there to suit everyone. If you like spectacular views then you can wild camp, if you like a sense of community then you can stay at a campsite. If you don’t like sleeping on the ground then you can go glamping.

You are probably shocked to see self professed camping fans using phrases like good and bad camping trips. We don’t technically believe there is such a thing as a bad camping trip, just a poorly planned one.

This is why we have put together this list of things you should do before you go camping. You will find 5 tips on the list that will help you to plan the best camping trip ever. We have learned a lot of these lessons the hard way sadly. So we thought we’d share the information with you so you do not have to go through the same trials we did.

So, let us jump into this list of 5 tips for planning the perfect camping trip.

#1 – Make sure you book your trip at the right time of the year for the destination

You would be surprised by the number of people who do not research the weather patterns in an area before booking a trip there. While this may not affect you that much if you are staying in a hotel, but if you are camping it is very important that you don’t get this wrong. You do not want to visit a place in the rainy season or when it frosts overnight.

If you are trying to book in a popular area and the price seems too good to be true, make sure you’re not accidentally booking in the off-season.

#2 – Make sure there are lots of activities in the area that you are visiting

Before you book a trip to an area, you want to make sure that there are actually things to do there. You do not want to arrive and find out that the reason the campsite was so cheap was because the area has nothing to offer.

You can prevent this problem by using tools like Trip Adviser and local travel blogs to check the area out before you arrive there. They might be able to point you towards an amazing hike or a local gallery that shouldn’t be missed.

#3 – Check out the restaurants and bars before you visit them

Another thing that we like to do before we travel to an area is to look at all of the bars and the restaurants in the area online. We make sure we decide where we are going to eat before we leave for our trip.

We use local blogs, big websites like Trip Advisor, and reviews to make sure that we are going to be eating the best food that the area has to offer. There is nothing worse than spending money on a bad meal. Doing this prevents that sad event from happening.

#4 – Pack emergency entertainment

No matter what you have planned for the day there is usually some time that you have to fill at night. When you don’t have the luxury of an easy power supply and overhead lights you can’t fall back on watching films or reading books.

So, what can you do? Well, firstly, we recommend bringing a pack of cards because you can play over 100 games with them and they will take up very little space in your bag. Drinking games are also a good option if you are on an adults only trip.

#5 – Plan for emergencies

Our final tip is to plan for emergencies.

We recommend doing your research and bringing an emergency kit with you. This should include a fully stocked first aid kit and a fire extinguisher. You should also make sure that you pack sunscreen.

We also recommend including a folder (make sure that it is waterproof) that contains a physical map to the nearest hospital, pharmacist, and police station. We would write down all of the emergency numbers for the area and save them on our phones.
