The highly acclaimed Dick Johnson is back again with his latest novel – Dead Reckoning. Long time agent turned policeman, Johnson finds himself in command of the biggest assignment of his life: catching a high-ranking member of the IRA in the midst of the IRA’s worst crisis since the Troubles. Having lost most of his men, he and his partner, actress and activist, Corrine Regan, must embark on a daring escape plan to deliver the bad news to their boss that the war is over. Playing the role of the hunted, Johnson must fight for his life against a ruthless killer – one who has more in mind than simply completing the job.
In terms of plot and characterisation, Dead Reckoning is very successful. There are few if any subplots or’machinery’ within the book which detract from its effectiveness. Johnson provides a strong supporting cast, filled with both well-drawn personalities and compelling supporting actors, such as the excellent Corrine Regan. This isn’t just a murder mystery; it’s also an entertaining action-adventure which manages to combine the best elements of thrillers, conspiracy, courtroom drama, and even a touch of humor.

I don’t want to give too much away, but Dead Reckoning is going to be a memorable experience for readers. The story’s pace is fast-paced and highly detailed. It may even scare you a bit at times (it shouldn’t though). However, in terms of content, it’s nothing compared to his other works, such as Code Black. If you’re looking for something new and different, then this is definitely worth reading. If you like his military spy thriller genre, then Dead Reckoning will keep you entertained.
