This new retelling of H.G Wells’ novel is more than your typical sci-fi horror. Leigh Whannel,
who has co-written a series of solid horror flicks along with James Wan (Saw, Insidious, Dead
Silence) made his directorial debut with a middling Insidious: Chapter 3. After following with
writing another middling sequel to his debut film, Whannel revived himself with a wildly original
cyberpunk body-horror flick Upgrade. It was only natural to be excited about to see this horror
enthusiast’s new take on the classic tale, and he does deliver, to an extent.
Whannel adds his spin to the tale with very relevant psychological takes with a lot of emotions at
stake. While the previous adaptations of the tale were mostly built around the “invisible man”
himself, this adaptation by Whannel cares a lot about the victim, yes singular. Cecilia who has
been suffering a very abusive relationship with her wealthy, twisted husband is suddenly hit with
the news of his suicide, however, she believes it to be a hoax and that there’s something more
sinister at play.
Whannel turns to Hollywood's go-to person for emotional breakdowns—Elizabeth Moss for
Cecilia and she delivers yet again. Moss internalizes the trauma and adeptly depicts the
paranoia, agoraphobia and other psychological difficulties Cecilia experiences. Moss makes all
the emotional undertones work, for the most part.
The downside to Whannel trying to shoe in culturally relevant issues into the classic horror tale
is that it falls flat sometimes. Though the relatability factor works, for the most part, certain
themes and emotions can seem a bit vague to the audience at times. It might even seem as
mere servicing rather than an honest consideration. Nevertheless, the fresh take has a lot to
offer to its audience still. Rooting a horror thriller in strong emotional tones rather than cheap
jumpscare cop-outs is a definitely a welcome change.
